The line that does exist
Clinical mental-health practice is regulated territory: psychology and psychiatric practice sit under recognised qualifications (RCI registration for clinical/counselling psychology) and relevant law. An NLP-trained coach who stays in coaching scope — goals, states, communication, performance — operates in the unregulated lane legitimately. The moment someone presents NLP as treatment for diagnosed conditions, they are misrepresenting both law and the field.
Practical guidance
- Use accurate titles: coach, trainer, communication consultant — not therapist, psychologist, counsellor
- Refer clinical presentations to qualified professionals; build the referral list before you need it
- Keep written scope clarity in your marketing — it protects you and the client both
