Core patterns
- Nominalisations: "you can allow that learning to happen" — process frozen into a thing the listener defines
- Presuppositions: "when you notice the change…" assumes the change rather than asserting it
- Embedded commands: marked-out imperatives inside larger sentences
- Ambiguity: words and phrases with multiple readings the listener selects between
- Tag questions and softeners that lower resistance to suggestions
Where it legitimately works
Storytelling and teaching (learners map general language onto their own situation), coaching (inviting a client to generate their own specifics), public speaking (holding attention with evocative rather than fully-specified claims), and self-talk design. Erickson's clinical context was consented therapy — not checkout pages.
The ethics line
Influence becomes manipulation when the vagueness hides the proposition being accepted. "This programme will transform your career" versus "many participants report changed careers — here is the recorded evidence": same persuasive goal, different honesty. IONI teaches the patterns with the ethics attached, because the patterns work either way.
Learning it properly
The skill is calibration: hearing which vague phrase landed and adjusting. That requires live practice with feedback on recordings of your own language — exactly what the six-month programme drills.
