Parts Work in NLP

"Part of me wants the promotion, part of me wants to disappear for six months." Parts language is how people naturally describe internal conflict, and NLP has structured protocols for resolving it. Powerful when done well, theatrical when done badly.

The premise

Conflicting "parts" are behaviour patterns with different intentions — the ambitious part and the rest part each protect something. The conflict persists because each side's positive intention is unacknowledged by the other. Resolution means finding the shared higher intention both serve.

Protocols

  • Six-step reframe: negotiate with the part generating the unwanted behaviour for its intention, then generate better means — see reframing
  • Visual squash: externalise the two parts as images in each hand, find what each wants for you at the highest level, notice they want the same thing, and integrate the images as the hands come together
  • Parts party formats and chairwork variants used in practice groups

Honest limits

Parts work handles ordinary internal conflict — decisions, ambivalence, self-sabotage patterns. It does not treat dissociative conditions or trauma; practitioners who treat every client as a parts carnival are over-serving the tool. Scope discipline first, technique second.

Practice

The protocols read as theatre on the page and only become real with live work: timing, calibration, and the moment of actually waiting for the part's response. This is advanced-curriculum material in the programme, after the listening base is built.

Frequently asked questions

Are "parts" real things in the brain?

They are a useful model of competing behaviour patterns, not literal neural structures. The metaphor works when it produces resolution; take the neurology claims lightly.

Can I do parts work on myself?

Simple ambivalence, yes. Deeper conflict benefits enormously from a practitioner — you cannot easily observe your own system from inside it.
