NLP vs Hypnotherapy

NLP and hypnotherapy share an ancestor — Milton Erickson — and a confusion in the market. They are different practices with different training routes and different scope.

The actual differences

  • Method: hypnotherapy works with formally induced trance states for therapeutic change; NLP works conversationally with language, states and submodalities
  • Training: hypnotherapy certification involves supervised clinical-style practice and, in credible schools, mental-health prerequisites; NLP training has no such gate
  • Scope: hypnotherapy is practised as complementary therapy with clinical adjacency; NLP is coaching/training-scope work
  • Ancestry: both borrow from Erickson — NLP's Milton Model is literally modelled from his language

Choosing between them

For conversational, communication-level change work: NLP. For deep-state habit and therapeutic-adjacent work: a qualified hypnotherapist. For clinical issues: neither — a mental-health professional first. Many practitioners train both, which is legitimate when each is kept in its own scope.

The confusion to avoid

India's bundle certificates (NLP + hypnosis + coaching in one week) produce practitioners of neither discipline at depth. Depth per discipline tracks supervised hours — check them separately, exactly as our how-to-choose checklist says.

Frequently asked questions

Is NLP a form of hypnosis?

No — NLP uses Ericksonian-derived language patterns conversationally. Formal trance induction belongs to hypnotherapy.

Which is more effective, NLP or hypnotherapy?

Neither categorically — they suit different presenting goals, and evidence quality varies within each. Scope-match before method-match.
